Reading at School

Leah's new daycare (which we love!) asked us to bring in some Braille books to read in class. We sent some in and one of the parent advisors from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind brought some in as well. Leah's teacher, Ms. Kim, told Stephen that they have been reading Leah's Braille books every day in class and using the Braille books to share with the other children about Leah's blindness. Ms. Kim thinks most of the kids are really starting to understand. She said that the kids all like to close their eyes so they can feel/read the story the same way Leah does. Let me pause right here for a minute and say... moving Leah to this new daycare is one of the best decisions we have made. When Stephen told me about the other children closing their eyes to be like Leah, I had to fight back tears. This is what we want for Leah - to be loved and accepted, a valued member of her community. Now, back to school. Ms. Kim also said that the other kids like to find things they think Leah would like to feel and take them to Leah to feel. My heart is filled with joy at knowing that my little girl is loved!

  2. Oh I am so thrilled along with you. It made this grandma cry too! I am so proud of you and Stephen for giving Leah the best possible care (next to you of course) that she can have! I am also amazed that something we thought was so terrible (having to change daycare) turned out to be the best possible situation for Leah! Give her a big hug and kiss from her Grandma!

  5. When you put yourselves in the will of God, He does amazing things! Leah is so blessed to have you and Baby Gator to introduce her to other children in this most sensitive way. These little ones will be sensitive to those who are not exactly like them for the rest of their lives. I praise God for you every day.
    Love you so much,
    Nana

  6. What a great post Rachael. Leah will be the best of all the Burgins in seeing with her other senses (always a growing edge for me). I'm looking forward to learning stuff from her. xo
